Africa to The World: Hollywood Edition

So 2016, though an overall L, was like a major W for the African community in Hollywood. We really did not come to play.

Insecure, first of all, was just amazing. Issa Rae and Yvonne Orji came to HBO and put they’re all into that pilot season. It’s like two month later and I still think about broke pu@#y and the struggle that was Molly’s love life.

Then we have Jovan Adepo from Fences. Imagine your first major motion role giving you the opportunity to work with a legend like Denzel Washington. Do y’all know how many actors struggle to even get a minor role in Hollywood?

Queen of Katwe, brought to us by Disney is almost as african as hollywood gets without being racist and prejudice. You got the OG’s David and Lupita with this bright new actress Madina Nalwanga. I’m really not sure why the movie didn’t get as much publicity and praise as it deserves considering it received a 96% on rotten tomatoes, but that’s a rant for another time

Apart from Movies, we were also getting all up in the music scene here too. Wizkid first and foremost owned this year. One dance and a Single with Justine Skye ? Mans had Alicia Keys getting jiggy to Ojuelegba…ICONIC. Then there’s Ayo Jay who literally came out of nowhere and had all the akatas singing and asking if they could have our numbers. Man got two different remixes with both Chris Brown AND Fetty Wap

Honorable mention to the first One Africa Music Fest in New York which was so fire that they had a second one this same year in Houston.

Like I don’t think y’all get it, we really coming up right now. y’all better get with it or hate from a distance
